The brief

Client need & context

The main worktop was insufficient to comfortably support everyday use, particularly meal preparation and serving. The client wanted a generous additional surface, without demolishing the existing wall or undertaking heavy structural works likely to complicate the project.

Design constraints

Constraints that shaped the project

  • Existing work surface too limited
  • Existing wall to be retained
  • Need for an additional zone for preparation and serving
  • Search for immediate functional gain
💡

Editorial note — Key decision

  • Creation of a freestanding central island
  • Addition of a second worktop dedicated to preparation and plating
  • Integration of additional base storage
  • Carefully calibrated placement to preserve natural circulation around the island
Scope

What was included

🪵

Furniture & fittings

A complete modular kitchen with the addition of a freestanding island designed to extend the usable surface area and enhance everyday comfort. The composition paired Carat Beige wall units, Iroko base units, and a Chiva White granite worktop, resulting in an aesthetic that is balanced, luminous, and timeless.

Furniture cost: ~ 2.8M FCFA
📋

Project manager coordination

The project manager oversaw the implementation of the island in careful dialogue with the existing setting, with particular attention to circulation, dimensions, and alignments. Coordination of installation, supervision of contractors, and management of adjustments ensured a result that was precise, coherent, and immediately transformative.

Project learnings

What this project revealed

A project does not always require structural transformation to achieve a major impact. Here, the addition of an island significantly enhanced the kitchen’s performance, providing more surface area, more storage, and a more considered staging of everyday use.
